We are pleased to announce the publication of an updated version of our guidance on the use of chlorhexidine for skin preparation in neonates, which has been developed in conjunction with our colleagues at BAPM.

This is a complex topic, with conflicting evidence and resultant significant variation in practice nationally. The guidance provides a pragmatic, expert consensus opinion, aiming to balance the risks of neonatal infection due to inadequate skin antisepsis against those of skin injury due to inappropriate chlorhexidine use. We hope that this guidance allows organisations to review their current practice and encourages adoption of a more standardised approach nationally.

To help develop the evidence base in this area, we would encourage reporting of cases of skin injury secondary to the use of topical antiseptic solutions both via the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme and the standardised case report form provided on this page. Completed case report forms should be sent to the local neonatal ODN team or equivalent in the devolved nations.
