Asthma
Asthma is the most common long-term medical condition in children and young people (CYP). Asthma outcomes in the UK are amongst the worst in Europe and sadly, every year, children continue to avoidably die from asthma.
As a result, NHS England has identified a whole systems approach to asthma management within the National bundle of care for CYP with asthma which encompasses competencies, training and education needs of all staff involved in the management of CYP with asthma within the National Capabilities Framework.
The National Capabilities Framework for Professionals who care for CYP with asthma recommends a 5 tiered framework based on the role and involvement of the professional.
NPPG recommend all members ensure they are competent according to the training capabilities framework at the tier appropriate for their role and furthermore promote this to their colleagues.
The following levels are most relevant to NPPG members:
Tier 2 Supporting prescribed care
Tier 3 Assessment and prescribing of care:
Tier 4 and 5 – For Specialist respiratory paediatric pharmacists managing difficult and severe asthma
To learn more about the Framework see: https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/National-Capabilities-Framework-3.pdf
Training to support the framework is available at Asthma (Children and young people) – elearning for healthcare (e-lfh.org.uk)’
CPPE have also developed a module on paediatric asthma which can be used together with the above training, available at https://www.cppe.ac.uk/programmes/l/child-ec-01/ ‘
