Paediatric Neurosciences SIG

Chair

Chair: Andrew Taylor, Lead Neurology Pharmacist, Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust
The NPPG Paediatric Neurosciences Special Interest Group brings together pharmacy professionals working in, or with an interest in, paediatric neurosciences.
The group provides a national forum for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to share expertise, support professional development and promote the safe and effective use of medicines in children and young people with neurological conditions. It aims to connect colleagues across different centres and practice settings, from specialist neuroscience services to pharmacy professionals who may encounter these patients less frequently.
Our aims
The SIG aims to:
  • provide a network for knowledge-sharing, peer support and collaboration;
  • support education, training and professional development in paediatric neurosciences pharmacy;
  • promote consistency and good practice in the use of medicines for children and young people with neurological conditions;
  • identify shared challenges and areas of variation in practice;
  • develop and share useful resources where this would benefit NPPG members; and
  • provide specialist pharmacy input to NPPG education, consultations and other professional activities.
Scope
The group has a broad paediatric neurosciences remit, including:
  • epilepsy and seizure management;
  • neuromuscular conditions;
  • neurodevelopmental and neurodisability-related pharmacotherapy, including complex motor disorders;
  • neurosurgery and neurorehabilitation;
  • high-risk medicines, monitoring and medicines optimisation;
  • novel and emerging therapies, including advanced therapies where relevant; and
  • interface working between tertiary, secondary and community services.
Education and collaboration
Education and shared learning will be an important part of the SIG’s work. The group plans to contribute to NPPG Bitesize sessions, webinars and other educational activities, covering both specialist developments and practical topics relevant to pharmacists working outside specialist neuroscience centres.

Membership is open to NPPG members with an interest in paediatric neurosciences, including pharmacists and pharmacy technicians at all stages of their careers.
